Overview
Long-term residence for the purpose of family reunification lets close family members join a person who is already living legally in Czechia, so the family can live together there. It is a residence route in its own right — it is not automatic, it is not granted on arrival, and the family relationship and the sponsor's situation in Czechia are both examined. Applications are decided case by case and processing can take several months, so families should plan for a wait and should not make travel plans on the assumption of a quick or guaranteed approval.
Eligibility
In general terms, this route may be open to the spouse or partner of a person legally resident in Czechia, and to minor children joining a parent who is legally resident in Czechia, as well as to certain other close family members under the official rules. The sponsor — the family member already in Czechia — must hold legal residence there and must meet income and accommodation requirements, in general terms, so the authority can see that the family can support itself and has somewhere suitable to live in Czechia. The exact family members covered, and the documents proving the relationship, follow the current official rules on ipc.gov.cz.
Requirements
The usual order of steps: 1) Confirm that the sponsor holds legal residence in Czechia and that your family relationship is one covered by the family reunification rules. 2) Gather documents proving the family relationship, such as marriage or birth certificates, in the form the authority requires. 3) Prepare evidence of the sponsor's residence status, income and accommodation in Czechia, in general terms as the current rules require. 4) Submit the application for long-term residence for the purpose of family reunification at the Czech embassy in the applicant's country of residence — book early, as appointment capacity is limited in many countries. 5) Wait for the decision; processing can take several months. 6) After approval, travel to Czechia, register your arrival and address as required, attend biometrics and collect the residence card. Who it is NOT for: if the sponsor does not yet hold legal residence in Czechia, if the relationship is not one covered by the rules, or if income and accommodation requirements cannot be shown, this route is not open in that form — and visiting a relative is a different matter from residence for family reunification. Guidance, not legal advice — the embassy/authority decides every application.
